Marking 99 Years: Exploring the History of South Kentish Town Disused Tube Station

South Kentish Town disused tube station, located in the London Borough of Camden, has a rich and fascinating history. The station has been closed to the public for almost a century, since it closed it's doors on 5th June, 1924. The closure was due to low passenger numbers, as the station was located in a relatively quiet residential area of Kentish Town. Despite this, the station was once an important part of London's transportation network.

The station opened in 1907 as part of the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR). The line ran between Charing Cross and Golders Green, and South Kentish Town was one of the original stations on the route. The CCE&HR was later absorbed into the Northern line, and the station continued to serve the people of Kentish Town for many years.

During World War II, the station played an important role in the war effort. It was used as an air-raid shelter, providing protection for thousands of Londoners during the Blitz. The station's deep tunnels were the perfect place for people to seek refuge from the bombs falling above ground. After the war, the station was used for storage by London Transport, and it remained closed to the public.

In 2016, the station was opened to the public once again, but this time for a different purpose. Mission: Breakout escape rooms took over the space and transformed it into an immersive escape room experience. Visitors can now explore the disused station and solve puzzles in order to escape. The unique location and history of the station add an extra layer of intrigue to the escape room experience.

As we prepare to mark the 99th anniversary of the station's closure on June 5th, it is worth reflecting on the important role this station played in London's history. From its origins as part of the CCE&HR to its use as an air-raid shelter during World War II, the station has been witness to many important events. Now, as an escape room location, the station is once again playing a role in the lives of Londoners and visitors to the city.

South Kentish Town disused tube station is a reminder of the rich history that can be found throughout London's transport network.
